Brynhald — Today at 10:16 PM Mmm. I have done a lot of research and listened to a lot of arguments on both sides. And I just don't agree. Not with all of it at least. Unfortunatly if you both have the same qualifications for a job it is an employers right to pick based purely off of any form of preference. Be it race, personality, gender etc. The narrative of saying "It isn't fair that x person with a white name got the job over x person with the ethnic name" is dangerous. And has bigger complications further down the line. There is a roll on effect for everything and I think in terms of jobs where two people have the same qualifications it is potentially disastrous to enter a world where it is mandated to hire the ethnic sounding person over the white one. Mainly because I can't see an outcome there that is good. And even in a situation where you mandate that a certain number of colored, queer, or any other specific group of people is to be hired into a work place just means there is no chance that you are hiring the best people for the job. In some outlying cases in an industry full of qualified people you might. But that seems very unlikely to me. anxcrypt — Today at 10:29 PM i'm not saying it should be mandated but the person hiring should definitely examine WHY they have those preferences. Personality aside because that's important, why should race or gender or sexuality be a preference besides subconscious prejudice? Hiring a woman because she'd be better to look at than a man vs not hiring a woman because she "wouldn't be as good" as a man even though they have the same qualifications. Hiring a white person over a black person, i don't see any reason why there'd be preference besides prejudice tbh. Also, again, not saying it should be mandated that a certain number of whatever minority be hired - the people best for the job should definitely get it - but there's still people who will hire someone who isn't a minority just because of prejudice. There's also the fact that education and whatnot in order to become more qualified is harder to acquire for minorities because of prejudice in the first place. Because, for example, queer teenagers are more likely to be kicked out by their families than straight teenagers, they are more likely to have bad grades because they have to deal with that plus having to focus on surviving, therefore they won't have the opportunity to get into the university they want to get the education required to be qualified for whatever job. Especially since university costs are ******* outrageous here in the US =w=; A straight teenager with better grades because they don't have to deal with the stuff that a queer teenager does will be able to get grants and scholarships based on grades and performance to help them pay for higher education, making it easier for them. A queer teenager would have to rely on getting a scholarship specifically for queer students, which wouldn't be nearly enough. So they'd have to get a job to pay for it and work harder to stay in university to get the same education. The more you work, the less you study OR you work and study and your physical and/or mental health plummet. That's just one example though.
