I have to say, in my 15 years of receiving an education, I have never had a more uninteresting, boring, unintuitive, out of touch teacher than you. I had really high hopes for this class, but not only did I learn absolutely nothing, I felt like I wasted an entire semester, like this class was nothing but filler on my schedule. I can safely say that all your students, past and current, felt the same way, from what I've heard around the school. If you're happy with that, feel free to stop reading here. But if you want to actually improve your teaching and run a class that students can not only learn from, but actually enjoy, I suggest you take some of these comments to heart. Let's talk about the review assignment. Why was an assignment based on info YOU DIDN'T EVEN TEACH US worth more than your other assignments? Do you know how unfair that is to students like me, who haven't taken a post-tonal theory class in at least 5 years? You couldn't even dedicate half of the first class to going over some of the topics on the assignment? How about the fact that as of now, April 27th, you haven't graded anything since MARCH 2ND? I don't care how busy you are, that is absolutely unacceptable. Your students have no clue how they're doing in this class because you have given us such a miniscule amount of feedback. The worst part of this for me is how hopelessly and absurdly out of touch you seem with your students. Let's take your "Netiquette" document that we were supposed to read before the semester began. Do you seriously think that after almost a year of attending online classes, we don't know how to do this by now??? We grew up on the Internet, and this ridiculous document looks like it was made around the time we were born. Do you really think anybody read this drivel? Do you really not understand that? WE ARE NOT CHILDREN!!! We are 20-somethings who don't need to be treated like babies. You don't have to tell us to not speak out of line when others present. I don't know what terrible things have happened to you in the past, but we are normal people. We know not to interrupt unnecessarily. Stop babying your students, and maybe they'll respect you more. The direction you gave us for all of our assignments, save for the discussion posts, was virtually non-existent. For example, take our final projects. I appreciate being able to do what feels like whatever I want for this project, but how do you expect us to get anything done with so little guidance? The whole time I worked on my final project, I had no clue if I'd get an A or an F for not following your "guidelines". For the last vectoral analysis we had do (assignment 4), you told us in the directions that we should consider Neo-Riemannian theory, expect... YOU DIDN'T EVEN TEACH US IT! I had to spend 2 hours just learning what it was to do my assignment. How is that fair to your students? This class was as unengaging as a class could possibly be. I understand that having our cameras off was the best choice because of the number of students, but it led to there being absolutely no connection between you and us. You couldn't pick me out of a lineup if your life depended on it. You never showed an ounce of interest in any of your students. You clearly don't care whatsoever about us as individuals, and it made the class unbearable. Webex was complete trash. Why couldn't you use Zoom, or even Blackboard Collaborate like everyone else? If you want to know why you had so many problems with people sharing their video and sound, it's because Webex is awful. I hate to break it to you, but the readings were pointless. Not once did anything we learned through the readings come into play. Do you really think your students read that stuff when they can tell that it won't matter? Could you even tell if we had read them? How about the fact that 100% (not an exaggeration) of breakout rooms had at least one person who added absolutely nothing? No "hello", no engagement, no help. Did you know that every time you sent us to breakout rooms, we as students would collectively go, "Umm... I have no clue what we're supposed to be talking about." Every time. You gave us such shallow, vague directions that we'd just sit there in silence because nobody knew what to say. Did you know your students would cross their fingers and pray that you didn't call on them to talk after the breakout rooms? That's how we felt about this class. You sent Today at 4:39 PM You sent Today at 4:37 PM Please, PLEASE stop saying "umm..." so much. It's extremely unprofessional, and makes trying to understand what you're teaching needlessly difficult. Stop making your sentences an hour long when they could be three words. For example, when we presented our first round of final presentations, you had to get up your list, say, "Thanks to -random student- for presenting, now let's move onto the next student, -insert name-. -Student-, whenever you're ready, please begin." For the love of god, just say" Next is -student-, please start whenever you're ready." Or how about how you call PDFs "electronic copies." WHO DOES THAT??? You clearly know a lot about the info you're teaching. Too bad you had the finesse of a 3-year old in communicating that with your students. Every sentence that came out of your mouth was complete word vomit, and wasted SO much time over the course of the semester. It was laughably predictable by the end. This was really your nail in coffin. If I, a native English speaker, had trouble deciphering your word soup, how do you think the foreign students felt? You were like the textbook definition of prolix. And by the way, saying that we have no assignments EXCEPT for the reading is complete BS. Reading is an assignment!!! It felt like you were mocking us every time you said that. I'm sorry if these comments come off as extremely harsh, but I'm trying to impart some actual change on you. Don't just laugh these comments off. Don't just convince yourself that it's just me, or that I'm an idiot (I have straight A's right now through my entire grad degree, although to be honest I don't think I have a chance in hell at getting an A in this class, but who knows??? I haven't gotten a grade since almost February!) Change your teaching! Take pride in what you do.
