MAGIC: THE GATHERING Chapter One OUTLINE -- 12 May 2020 INT. INNISTRAD CASTLE - HANGING PRISON Several small iron CAGES hang from chains, suspended in a black void. One of the cages holds a humanoid SKELETON. Another holds JACE BELEREN, early 20s, tightly hunched over in the confined space, cooling his heels. He gazes into the bottomless pit below. Yeah, he’s screwed. TITLE CARD SUPERS: “INNISTRAD” Jace takes something from his pocket. A brass COIN. He rolls it down his knuckles, contemplating his fate. After a beat the cage jostles. Jace looks up to see someone sliding down the chain -- a muscular man in shining armor, GIDEON JURA, early 20s. Gideon alights on top of the cage and Jace looks up at him, annoyed: “About time you showed up.” Gideon returns the attitude as he busts open the hatch: “Why, you got somewhere else to be?” Jace: “Yeah, anywhere but here.” As they climb up the chain, they come under fire from an ARCHER on an observation platform. The banter continues as Gideon throws up MAGIC SHIELDS to block the arrows. Gideon: “Why did Lord Rydon lock you up?” Jace: “I beat him at cards.” Gideon clarifies for him: “You cheated him at cards.” Jace: “He’s a sore loser.” Gideon shakes his head, why would Jace risk cheating someone like that? Jace: “Because he’s rich. And he stole it all from his people.” Gideon: “I suppose you were going to give it back?” Jace: “Some of it. Probably.” Jace creates an ILLUSION of a bird of prey screaming at the Archer, who startles and tumbles backward over the rail, catching himself just in time. Jace and Gideon reach a network of CATWALKS. “I don’t know why I stick my neck out for you, Jace” Gideon says, “One of these days I should just leave you to rot.” Jace grins and tosses the coin to Gideon: “For your trouble.” Gideon is puzzled, and Jace explains it’s the one thing Rydon didn’t know he took. This worthless coin. Gideon studies, then trips a small catch on the rim and it unfolds into a SPHERE, a soft glow of magic at the center. Delicate clockwork gears play a simple melody, like a MUSIC BOX. Jace gawks, reaches for it: “I changed my mind, give it back.” Gideon closes his fist around it, smiling: “I’m keeping it.” Suddenly they’re set upon by several GUARDS. Jace and Gideon work together as a team to defeat them, a well-oiled machine, fighting back-to-back, using their magic to complement each other. In short order the Guards are unconscious. Jace turns to Gideon: “Let’s get out of here, I’m starving.” Gideon: “What are you in the mood for? Zendikar?” Jace shrugs, “I’m feeling more like Ixalan tonight.” With sufficient “runway,” they dash down the catwalk. With a flash of bright orange energy they PLANESWALK away... ROLL MAIN TITLES - MAGIC: THE GATHERING 2 OVER BLACK, A TITLE CARD: “Ten Years Later.” EXT. NALAAR HOME - KALADESH - SUNSET A simple but finely-crafted dwelling nestled in graceful, sculpted hills. TITLE CARD SUPERS: “KALADESH” INT. NALAAR WORKSHOP - CONTINUOUS Inside this cluttered workshop we find CHANDRA NALAAR, 16, hunched over a workbench, engrossed in a project. She’s tinkering with an intricate mechanical construct, a clock or the like, but it’s not working. As her frustration mounts, the REGULATOR she wears on her right arm hisses and vents excess heat. Her mother, PIA NALAAR, 40s, enters. It’s time for dinner and evening chores. A moody teenager, Chandra says she’s in the middle of something and keeps working. When Pia presses her, Chandra’s temper flares (accompanied by more hisses from the regulator), and she snaps at her mother to leave her alone. Pia tries a different tack, asks if she can take a look. Maybe she can help...? Chandra angrily tells her to go away. Pia is taken aback: where is this attitude coming from? Chandra demands to know why her mother won’t allow her to apprentice in the city. All the best artificers are there! A familiar argument erupts. Pia says it’s too dangerous. Pyromancy is illegal on Kaladesh. “I know, that why you make me wear this ******* thing,” Chandra says, brandishing the regulator and summoning FIRE at her fingertips. But the flames slip from her control and catch some nearby shelves on fire. Pia and Chandra react with alarm as the flames quickly spread toward some canisters of glowing blue AETHER. Highly volatile and explosive. Pia uses MAGIC to put out the fire, scolding Chandra: “You can’t control it even with that “*******” thing.” Chandra starts to storm off but Pia appeals to her: “They came for your father, Chandra. I couldn’t bear it if they came for you, too.” Chandra stops. That’s not fair -- she’s not doing anything wrong! She just wants to live her life, be herself, and not hide what she is or cover up her Regulator in public. “I’m special, why can’t I show the world?” Pia puts her foot down; as long as Chandra lives under her roof that’s the way it’s going to be. Chandra’s regulator hisses with her temper as she stomps off: “I hate you!” OUTSIDE, Chandra regards her regulator in the moonlight. Frustration rising, she takes it off and lets loose. Blasts a fountain of fire into the sky. The unexpected “recoil” from such a large effort knocks Chandra on her butt. MTG 101 - OUTLINE 5/12/20 3 EXT. FOREST NEAR NALAAR HOME - SAME TIME A four-legged HELLHOUND hunts in the darkness. Seen only in shadow, the creature pauses, unfurls a frill to scan the area. In its POV WE SEE a single point of light, glowing orange, in the distance (think infrared vision). The Hellhound moves off in that direction, quickening its pace... EXT. FOREST/PROMONTORY - SAME TIME Chandra walks through the surrounding FOREST, fuming, until she reaches a clearing atop a hill. Delicate wisps of glowing blue AETHER stretch across the night sky. In the distance, thirty miles away that might as well be a thousand, is the city of GHIRAPUR. Its graceful spires twist into the sky, lights glimmering on the horizon. A seemingly impossible dream. Chandra composes herself and puts the regulator back on. With one last look at the distant city she starts back into the forest. As she walks, Chandra hears a crunch of foliage. She turns to look as the Hellhound leaps out of the darkness! Chandra instinctively throws up her arm to protect herself, and the beast’s jaws clamp down on her. She falls to the ground, the Hellhound pinning her with its distinctive THREE-CLAWED FORELIMB. Chandra struggles against the beast. She tries to blast it with FLAME, but with her right forearm caught in the beast’s jaws she can’t get an angle. By the staccato bursts of firelight, we see the Hellhound for the first time. Pale, leathery skin. Teeth. Claws. Wings folded against its powerful body. And no eyes. The fire startles the beast and Chandra twists free. Runs for home. The Hellhound gives chase. Easily catches up. Knocks her to the ground. Chandra cries out, but there’s no one to hear. The Hellhound holds her fast... but its slavering jaws don’t bite. A BLACK MIST rolls out of the woods. In the gloom, Chandra glimpses FRAGMENTS of a regal, horned figure with no face. Only a mouth, beautiful and terrible, moving closer to plant a kiss of death. This is ASHIOK. Chandra surrenders to her fate, paralyzed with fear. But before the end comes, something knocks Ashiok back with a concussive blast of energy. A warrior in gleaming armor, shield in hand, SURAL “whip-sword” whistling through the air. Gideon Jura! Chandra watches in awe as Gideon battles Ashiok’s beast, whip slashing. The Hellhound leaps to attack, its three-clawed talon raking across Gideon’s shield and ripping it from his grasp. The impact sends Gideon sprawling, helpless. Acting impulsively, Chandra charges, clumsily shooting bursts of FIRE at the Hellhound. In this moment of pure adrenaline something deep within Chandra changes. Ignites. Her eyes flash a signature ORANGE. She cries out and -- in a trident-shaped burst of flame -- disappears. MTG 101 - OUTLINE 5/12/20 4 EXT. BLIND ETERNITIES - TIMELESS - CONTINUOUS Chandra finds herself tumbling out of control through the BLIND ETERNITIES, a primordial space in which float hundreds of pocket realities -- the PLANES. She’s caught in the tides of unfathomable energies. Helpless. Drowning. Suddenly... ...the Sural WHIPS around her arm. It’s Gideon! He directs them toward one of the planes. They dive toward it... EXT. ALLEY - RAVNICA - NIGHT ...and MATERIALIZE in a rain-soaked alley. Chandra is dazed, disoriented. What the **** just happened...? But before Gideon can explain there’s another flash of orange light. They turn to see the same black mist creeping from the shadows and glimpse a horned silhouette. Ashiok has followed them. A beat later, a NIGHTMARE-MANIFESTATION creeps out of the mist -- the demon-like LORD OF THE PIT, its body covered in what looks like burnt skin. Gideon recognizes the demon, stunned: “But you’re dead... I killed you.” The battle resumes. Gideon fights valiantly to protect Chandra, throwing up SHIELD MAGIC to protect them. Gideon orders Chandra to run, but she refuses: “Don’t tell me what to do!” She TAKES OFF her Regulator and lets loose with a massive TORRENT OF FLAME. It’s totally out of control, like a fire hose. The Manifestation is consumed by fire. But the flames sweep the alley, setting everything flammable alight. Gideon tries to dodge, but his armor is scorched. The recoil knocks Chandra back into a wall. She shakes it off, surprised by her display of raw power. Then, Chandra sees the Manifestation stalking toward her, engulfed in flame, but utterly unfazed. Gideon lashes out with his Sural and knocks it back. He tells Chandra they can’t win this fight. But he can buy her time to escape. Gideon grabs Chandra’s shoulder, locks eyes with her: “Find Teferi. Find the clock tower. There is no time to argue. GO.” Chandra reluctantly grabs her Regulator and flees, glancing back in time to see Gideon overwhelmed. Struck down by the Lord of the Pit, Ashiok looming behind. She keeps running, desperate to get away. Rounding a corner, she finds herself looking out over a vast expanse of architecture. It takes her breath away. This is the cosmopolitan city-plane RAVNICA. TITLE CARD SUPERS: “RAVNICA” Frightened and confused, Chandra disappears into the maze of streets... MTG 101 - OUTLINE 5/12/20 5 INT. NIGHTCLUB - NIGHT In an upscale NIGHTCLUB in another part of Ravnica, skeletal, robot-like CONSTRUCTS fashioned from Etherium (a rare and beautiful metal infused with magic) tend bar, serve drinks, and work security. The club is busy with all kinds of fashionable CLIENTELE, partying to thumping music in the neon-dark space. We find Jace Beleren (now in his 30s) moving through the space toward a booth near the back where a sleazy GOBLIN flashes his cash and makes gross, suggestive comments to a female SERVER. Jace dips into their minds as he approaches (which we hear in VO); the Goblin’s thoughts are even more lascivious, while the Server just hopes he’ll tip well. Jace is clearly a mind-reader. As Jace slides into the booth, the impatient Goblin asks him if he brought the goods. Jace glances around furtively and places a small HORN on the table: “Fresh this morning, straight from Theros.” The Goblin lights up: “Gods-damned Planeswalkers, you get all the best shit. Once I grind this up I can go all night.” The Goblin’s thoughts are more explicit: “I’ll ride that barmaid like a rented griffin...” The Goblin reaches for the horn, but Jace pulls it away: “Not so fast, we don’t have a deal yet.” As they negotiate, Jace dips into the Goblin’s mind again to learn how much money he has, what he thinks of Jace (“A-hole”), and how much the horn means to him. Jace uses this information to play the Goblin like a fiddle and fleece him of everything he has -- while making the Goblin believe he’s getting an amazing deal (“the beast the horn came from is rare and endangered, only found on Theros”). The exchange is made. Jace takes the payment (a bag of precious stones, and the Goblin’s heirloom ring for good measure), and the Goblin greedily grabs the horn. Business concluded, Jace makes his way through the crowd to the bar and orders a drink. He looks back at the Goblin -- this is the best part -- and uses his magic to DISPEL the illusion. The Goblin watches in horror as the horn dissolves into a PHALLUS before his eyes. He throws it down on the table in anger and disgust. Jace grins as the Goblin pushes into the crowd, furiously scanning the room. Jace creates an ILLUSION of himself heading for the door. The enraged Goblin scrambles after the phantom, exiting. Jace’s drink arrives and he raises it in a toast... but before he can down it, a pair of BOUNCER CONSTRUCTS take him firmly by the arms and pull him toward the back room. Jace feigns innocence and tries to talk his way out of it. But the Bouncers, being mindless automatons, are immune to his charms -- and his mind magic. As he’s dragged off, a hummingbird-like SURVEILLANCE DRONE flies after them... INT. NIGHTCLUB - TEZZERET’S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS The Bouncers hustle Jace into a lavish office filled with beautiful artwork. Off to the side, a delicate ACCOUNTANT CONSTRUCT (with multiple appendages and rotating jeweler’s loupes) is busily counting stacks of cash and other valuables. Behind the desk, a SHADOWY MTG 101 - OUTLINE 5/12/20 6 FIGURE is reviewing images from another Surveillance Drone. Jace is clearly nervous. He sits and tries to make small talk, but the figure ignores him. In his own time the figure turns to face Jace. It’s TEZZERET, the biomechanically-modified “artificer” crime lord who owns the nightclub. He speaks with the icy calm strength of the very powerful: “Where have you been? I’ve been looking for you.” Jace shrugs: “Around. You know. Spent some time on Dominaria.” Tezzeret says he has an opportunity for him, one that pays handsomely. Jace is intrigued. “It’s a mind job,” Tezzeret explains, “I need some information from a Lawmage, information he’s not inclined to share.” Jace balks; he’s run a lot of shady schemes, but no way is he gonna go against the Azorious Senate. Tezzeret presses him: “You have no qualms about using your gifts for your own myopic ends, why not use them for mine? I could use another Planeswalker. We could do great things together.” Jace thanks Tezzeret, but says he’s not looking for a partner. Jace tries to leave, but the Bouncers move to block the door. Tezzeret is disappointed in Jace’s answer but asks what made Jace think he could break the rules of Tezzeret’s club. Jace feigns ignorance, and Tezzeret turns to his PANOPTICON -- a curved wall of dozens of ever-shifting “pin screens” made of Etherium, each displaying a live feed. The Drone flits down to a VIEWING TABLE in front of the wall and plugs in. Etherium “pixels” create a 3-D “hologram” of Jace scamming the Goblin: “You should know better than to disrespect me, Jace. Your mind magic might work on two-bit scumbags like that, but it won’t work on me.” Tezzeret directs the Bouncers to rough-up Jace. The Bouncers beat Jace brutally until Tezzeret gestures for them to withdraw. Jace apologizes, winces in pain as he gets out the pouch of jewels: “You didn’t think I was going to forget your cut, did you?” The Accountant Construct moves to collect. Jace picks out a few stones and gives them to the Accountant. The little drone accepts the jewels... but holds its hands out for more. Keep ‘em coming. Jace picks out another few stones, and when it’s clear Tezzeret won’t be happy with anything less, he hands over his entire take. Tezzeret says he can’t allow Jace to run his scams inside his club. It’s bad for business. “Won’t happen again,” Jace assures him. Tezzeret warns Jace that if he keeps this up he’ll end up just like his old friend Gideon Jura. That oddly specific comment makes Jace’s blood run cold: “What’s that supposed to mean?” Tezzeret smiles cruelly... EXT. ALLEY - RAVNICA - SOON A dead body lies in the alley. Gideon Jura. Jace arrives at the scene, breathless. He reels, trying to make sense of it. Burn marks everywhere, a charred, misshapen corpse (the Lord of the Pit manifestation) nearby -- Gideon didn’t go down without a fight. A pair of masked ARRESTERS (police) are investigating. They recognize Jace immediately -- he’s evidently had brushes with the law in the past. The Arresters are troubled that a Planeswalker (“One of the good ones”) could be murdered in cold blood in the heart of the city. Jace bristles at the insult and asks what happened. MTG 101 - OUTLINE 5/12/20 7 The Arresters aren’t inclined to answer, and turn it on Jace: “You knew Gideon, when was the last time you saw each other?” Jace mumbles his answer, processing: “We haven’t really spoken in years.” The Arresters press him for more: Did Gideon have any enemies? Can Jace account for his whereabouts for the past few hours? It’s clear the Arresters respected Gideon but consider Jace a criminal. Jace asks for and receives a moment with his friend’s body. Gideon’s armor bears scorch marks and his shield sports a deep indentation (in the shape of a three-clawed talon). Something on the ground catches Jace’s eye -- a brass coin. Jace picks it up and twists it open into the music sphere. It glows softly from within as the delicate clockwork plays the charming (now haunting) melody. Jace is momentarily entranced -- after all these years, Gideon kept it. The Arresters tell Jace to put the coin down. It’s evidence. Jace snaps it closed: “No it isn’t. I gave it to him.” The Arresters tell him to drop it or face arrest. Jace frowns and drops it next to the body, then walks off into the rainy night. The Arresters tell Jace not to leave Ravnica, they may have more questions for him. One of them kneels to pick up the coin -- but it’s an illusion that evaporates when he tries to touch it. They turn back to look for Jace, but he’s gone. EXT. STREETS OF RAVNICA - NIGHT Meanwhile, Chandra (Regulator back on) wanders through Ravnica, overwhelmed by the sights and sounds of the city. It’s wondrous, threatening, mysterious, enticing -- even at this late hour. Spires and arches soar into the gloomy sky. A huge PACK ANIMAL lumbers down a lamp-lit cobblestone street, pulling a wagon of goods. A bridge spans a deep chasm, with a river and waterfall far below. An AIRSHIP floats overhead. A riot of GRAFFITI on a wall -- including a GLYPH of an inverted “A” that bears a crude resemblance to Ashiok’s head (and gives Chandra the willies). As she passes an alley, a SHADOW ELF watches Chandra go... All the while Chandra keeps checking over her shoulder, and now realizes someone is following her -- the Shadow Elf she’d walked past earlier. She quickens her pace, frightened, and rounds a few corners in an attempt to lose him -- finding herself face-to-face with a pair of LOWLIFES. They eyeball her, making lewd comments. Chandra summons fire as a warning, but that only amuses them. They have magic of their own, and seem intent upon using it... Before they can act , however, the Shadow Elf appears, asking Chandra if she is okay. She doesn’t know how to respond, unsure of who is the frying pan and who is the fire. The Lowlifes are belligerent for a beat, until they recognize the Shadow Elf as SIVERIL. Their attitudes change instantly and they apologize and walk away, clearly afraid. MTG 101 - OUTLINE 5/12/20 8 Siveril asks Chandra if she’s lost, if he can help her somehow. He wears fine clothes and flashes a caring smile, but it’s covering something darker, sinister. Chandra says she’s looking for a “fairy” in a clock tower. Siveril brightens, says he can help her: “Come with me. I know fairies, imps, goblins... I’m sure we can find whomever you’re looking for.” Something about Siveril frightens Chandra, the way he doesn’t want to take “no” for an answer. He takes Chandra’s hand, firmly. Chandra tries to pull away. Can’t. Finally, she blasts his hand with a puff of FLAME. Siveril recoils in pain, and Chandra hurries off into the night... INT. SHOP - NIGHT Elsewhere on Ravnica, the GHOST of a hoodlum, MAKS, shakes down a MERCHANT for protection money. Maks slaps him around, smashes inventory. On this plane, death does not release one from one’s obligations. And ghosts can **** you up. The transaction is interrupted by KAYA, late-20s, intense, on a job of her own: “This shop is under my protection now.” Maks scoffs at her until Kaya draws one of her NECROTIC DAGGERS, which glows purple. Recognizing the danger, Maks warns Kaya she’s a dead woman and he DISAPPEARS. A purple glow ENVELOPS Kaya and she DISAPPEARS, too... INT. SHOP - CONTINUOUS (SPIRIT DIMENSION) ... only to REAPPEAR in the SPIRIT DIMENSION. Everything is exactly the same, but the environment takes on an otherworldly hue. Maks turns to see her, shocked: “Spirit walker!” Kaya lunges with the dagger and Maks flees, passing through the wall. Kaya follows... EXT. NEIGHBORHOOD - CONTINUOUS (SPIRIT DIMENSION) A dizzying chase up, over, under, and through the buildings of Ravnica, Crouching Tiger-style, as Kaya can phase through solid matter as easily as the spirit. Maks gets the drop on Kaya and nearly kills her, but she’s able to slip free. The chase resumes until Maks puts an innocent BYSTANDER in jeopardy. Kaya makes the decision to let Maks get away and save the Bystander’s life. EXT. NEIGHBORHOOD - CONTINUOUS (REAL WORLD) Kaya phases back into the “real world” and saves the grateful Bystander. He tries to thank her, but she’s preoccupied, looking off at the city that Maks disappeared into. Scowling, she turns and walks off. EXT. KAYA’S STOREFRONT APARTMENT - SOON (NIGHT) Kaya arrives at her storefront apartment in a run-down neighborhood. Signage indicates she does work as a spiritualist and psychic medium. She starts down the stairs to her basement apartment when a voice calls out to her from the shadows. Kaya is instantly on guard, daggers in her hands in a flash... MTG 101 - OUTLINE 5/12/20 9 ... when Jace approaches from the darkness. Kaya relaxes and sheaths her weapons, but she isn’t exactly happy to see him: “What the hell do you want?” Jace asks if they can go inside and talk. Kaya refuses: “Here is fine. But make it fast, I’ve had a bad night and I’m ready for a long, hot bath. And no, that is not an invitation.” Jace says he needs her help. With the familiarity and annoyance of the ex-lover that she is, Kaya says it’s going to cost him -- making a sly reference to the “Unicorn Horn” bait-and-switch scam he pulled with the Goblin (clearly an old favorite of his). Jace says it’s for a friend. Kaya: “You don’t have any friends.” Jace: “It’s Gideon. He’s been murdered.” That strikes a chord. She’s heard Jace talk about Gideon and is sorry for his loss. “I have to find out who killed him,” Jace says, “I need to talk to him.” Kaya agrees, but she doesn’t work for free. She’ll add her expenses to what he owes her from the last time. Jace nods, “Okay, let’s go.” Not so fast, Kaya has one more term: “If I help you, we play by my rules. Understood?” Jace (a bit too fast): “Understood.” Kaya: “Take me to where it happened.” EXT. MARKET SQUARE - PRE-DAWN Chandra comes to a MARKET SQUARE. Most of the stalls are still closed for the night, but a few are open for business -- and at least there are more people here. She spots a (male) VENDOR selling food. Ravenous, Chandra orders something to eat. As the Vendor prepares the food, he sizes up Chandra -- she’s clearly in distress. He asks if she’s okay. Chandra says she’s lost. She’s trying to find a “clock tower.” The Vendor, who has a kindly streak, says there’s one not too far from here, down in the Rubblebelt. Chandra smiles -- her luck is finally changing. The Vendor hands her the food, and Chandra asks how much, pulling out a handful of Kaladeshi currency. The Vendor looks it over, confused. He doesn’t know what kind of money that is, but it’s worthless to him. Chandra is crestfallen, embarrassed. She hands the food back, on the verge of tears. The Vendor takes pity on Chandra, lost and alone in the rain, and tells her to keep it. Chandra gives him all of her currency and starts devouring the food. It may be the circumstances, but it’s the best thing she’s ever tasted. The Vendor smiles and points her in the right direction to find the clock tower. Chandra thanks him profusely and hurries off... EXT. ALLEY - PRE-DAWN Jace and Kaya arrive at the scene of the crime, now cleaned up and deserted. If Gideon hasn’t passed into the Aether, his spirit should be close by, Kaya explains. The recently deceased usually don’t stray far from where they died. They’re often disoriented, confused, trying to finish whatever task death interrupted. Jace holds out his hand expectantly, but Kaya refuses it. Too intimate. She points to her upper arm and Jace grasps her there instead. Purple magic ENVELOPS them both as she uses her necro-magic to phase them into the SPIRIT DIMENSION. MTG 101 - OUTLINE 5/12/20 10 EXT. ALLEY - CONTINUOUS (SPIRIT DIMENSION) Jace gasps as they transition: “I’ll never get used to that.” “Don’t let go,“ Kaya says, adding snarkily, “I know you’re not big on commitment.” As expected, they find GIDEON’S GHOST nearby, searching, wild-eyed: “Is she safe?” Gideon’s powerful sense of duty prevented him from passing into the Aether, consigning him to a living death. Jace tries to question him about what happened, but Gideon doesn’t recognize Jace. He can only babble incoherently, a frightened shell of himself. Jace starts to use his magic to enter Gideon’s mind, but Kaya stops him -- it’s wrong to read minds without permission. In fact, he only ever uses his magic for selfish ends. To cheat, to steal. Jace rolls his eyes, saying Kaya may think her morals are noble, but she’s still a killer. “I do what I do to help people,” Kaya says. Jace completes the thought: “For money.” Jace says he has no choice. Gideon is clearly in no state to grant permission. Kaya scowls, and Jace enters Gideon’s mind. It’s fractured, a riot of disjointed, horrific memories -- among them flashes of Chandra. Blasting fire. A witness -- or prime suspect -- in Gideon’s death. Jace withdraws from Gideon’s mind with a new sense of mission. EXT. RUBBLEBELT - DAWN (SAME TIME) Chandra makes her way down a narrow stairway that winds between ruined buildings. At the bottom it opens into a large area of abandoned, crumbling city that nature is reclaiming. Wild trees and other foliage overgrowing collapsed buildings. Ravnica’s RUBBLEBELT. The sun peeks through the city skyline, its early morning rays illuminating something unexpected and spectacular. A massive rock floating several hundred feet over the ruins, covered with greenery, vines clinging to the surface and hanging down, partially veiled by clouds. An island in the sky. And perched atop it, a monastery-like structure with an intricate ASTRONOMICAL CLOCK on a central STONE TOWER. Chandra takes it in, awestruck. That’s gotta be it. She surveys the task ahead and sighs, “How the **** am I supposed to get up there...?” EXT. ALLEY - CONTINUOUS (SPIRIT DIMENSION) Kaya wants to release Gideon, send him to the Aether to be at peace. She’s shaken, she’s never seen a spirit in this much pain. Jace objects, but Kaya insists that this is a kindness. Jace calms Gideon by entering his mind to share a happy memory from their time together -- which we see as a brief FLASHBACK of the two of them drinking and laughing over a private joke. Kaya places her hand on Gideon’s heart. Right before the end, Gideon has a moment of lucidity. He looks at Jace and with forgiving eyes says, “I knew you’d come back.” MTG 101 - OUTLINE 5/12/20 11 Struck by Gideon’s last words, Jace lets go of Kaya and DISAPPEARS. With a flash of light Kaya RELEASES Gideon’s spirit, and he fades into the Aether. EXT. ALLEY - CONTINUOUS (REAL WORLD) (TAG) Jace stands in the alley as a pale dawn breaks over the city, lost in his thoughts. Kaya REAPPEARS in the material world and asks Jace if he’s okay. He looks at her, vulnerable for the first time in a long time, but the moment passes and he shuts back down. He’s fine. Kaya knows better than to press and asks what they should do now? Jace looks at her, determined: “Find the girl who did that to Gideon. And kill her.” END OF EPISODE MTG 101 - OUTLINE 5/12/20
